L’esclave
Ossip Zadkine (1888-1967) |
1922 |
Pear wood |
Height: 175 cm |
Executed at the Chateau de Fiez in Savoie.
In the 1920s, Zadkine became interested in arts outside the academic canon, favouring the elongated forms of Romanesque statuary.
He made large-scale wooden sculptures drawing on techniques of Russian folk decoration, and exemplifying the immediacy of ‘direct carving’.
